Integrating the People and Technical Sides of SMM/CMM
Your Information Technology area probably spends a significant amount of energy trying to satisfy internal customers and support the business with tools and technologies. Most successful IT managers and CIO's know that it is not just the sophistication of the technology itself that leads to satisfied customers but how it is integrated with the business and supported by your people.
The software maturity model (SMM/CMM) suggests that the IT side of every business evolves through five predictable stages of technical development as it adds technologies and methodologies and tunes software processes. It also suggests that there is a similar need to develop the people side of the IT area if the business is to receive the full benefit of its technology dollars. Most IT shops work only on the technical side of the equation, striving to get to Level II or III technically while their people struggle at Level I on the behavioral side. VGI now offers a vertical and interlocking curriculum for IT shops which are trying to get to Level II or III (SMM or CMM) in a consistent and practical way.
